About BOSS Course

What is BOSS?

Basic Operative Surgical Skills (BOSS) is a well-structureed workshop which was started in 1999, developed and matured over the years. It is designed for trainees in all fields of surgery with the exception of ophthalmology. It is meant to ensure that a trainee learns and attains the proper and safe technique under direct supervision of expert trainers. The practical part of the course covers more than 80% of the time to ensure that a trainee has an ample time to develop the required skill.

Who should take BOSS Course?

The Priority goes to residents of the surgical field (General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, etc...) and it is now mandatory for an increasing number of specialties to attain the certification of Basic Surgical Skills to be allowed to be promoted to senior levels.

Why BOSS Course not others?

The target in BOSS Course is the skill and not only the knowledge. In order to obtain the skill, knowledge of the task is only the first step. The candidates then do the task under close supervision of an experienced tutor.

All their mistakes, pitfalls, weaknesses are pointed out and ensured to be corrected. Ideally one tutor to 2 candidates is the Boss setup.

Who are the instructors in this training?

The instructors are senior Staff in practice. They represent all surgical, Ob/Gyn specialties, with the exception of Ophthalmology. The surgical division involved includes (General Surgery, Orthopedics, Plastic, Pediatric, ENT, Neurosurgery, and Urology).

To become an instructor the staff has to learn the tasks in the course, master them, and join as a co-instructor prior to becoming instructor.

If you are interested in becoming an instructor please read our How to become an instructor page.

What is the recognition of this training?

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties has recognized the material of the course over the last 8 years. It was given a 23 CME hours for the trainees and 30 hours for the instructors.

It is the belief of the BOSS Course Scientific Committee that it should be a requirement for all surgical residents prior to promotion to R3 level of training

Are there practical sessions in this course?

Yes. Practical sessions are performed using a sponge and animal models.

We believe that a medical graduate who is licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery through his MBBS, can only do that on human subjects (patients) after he develops the basic safe skills needed on a non living matter and animal models.

The course has definitely bridged a significant gap between theory and practice.
